<![CDATA[Why don't we run out of tears?]]>Thu, 14 Dec 2023 04:45:57 GMThttp://savethehorses.org/our-blog/why-dont-we-run-out-of-tearsThis was last December pictured below. We lost 5 horses. This December we have lost 3 . Annie, Joker and Remi.

Why don't we run out of tears? Why do we continue knowing there will be more heartache. ahead? Why? Because we have a mission and can't turn our backs on any animal suffering even if we also suffer, we go on. Thank you for your support.

Dec 2022
SaveTheHorses has lost 5 horses in 15 days. It takes a toll on your heart. I know the reason I am here on Earth is to risk my heart but when it happens like this, it seems unbearable.

First Bashert, aka Punkin Pie, was with us almost a year. She came from a kill pen. She was loved by everyone who met her and especially by her adopter, Dani. Next was Samson who came from a local family who couldn't keep him safe. Loved by, Kay, she adopted him over a year ago. Next Danny came from the Amish, old and used up. We had him in quarantine. The stress of auctions and much change made him very sick. Then Cypress Slew, loved and adopted 19 years ago by Pam crossed the over. Last was Diesel, loved and adopted by Heather 13 years ago joined the others at the Rainbow Bridge. Each of these horses were very special. They came into our lives for a reason. Some stayed long, some much shorter of a time but all were treasured.

Now for we humans who are dealing with the loss. Trying to run past grief isn't working. We need to slow down and sit with each loss and grieve each horse. It just came so quickly, one after the other, we want to run from the pain. Grief is personal. It is the last thing we can give. There is a sacredness to the grief and tears. My heart hurts for all the humans involved. There are many people who knew these horses from being at the rescue and they also are feeling the sadness. The reality is we will grieve forever because love never ends.

RIP Bashert, Samson, Danny, Slew and Diesel.

<![CDATA[WHY DO HORSES NEED HAY?]]>Mon, 25 Sep 2023 02:47:24 GMThttp://savethehorses.org/our-blog/why-do-horses-need-hay
Horses need hay for various critical reasons, and donating to Save the Horses Hay Drive is a valuable way to support their well-being and the mission of this rescue organization.

Here's why hay is essential for horses and why people should consider donating to this cause:

 1. Nutritional Necessity: Hay is a primary source of nutrition for horses. It provides essential nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which are vital for their overall health.
 2. Digestive Health: Horses have a unique digestive system that relies on a continuous intake of fibrous materials like hay. Proper digestion and gut health depend on a regular supply of fiber to support the fermentation process in their gut. Without enough hay, horses can suffer from digestive disorders.
 3. Dental Health: Chewing hay helps maintain horses' dental health. The act of grinding down hay fibers naturally wears down their teeth, preventing dental issues that can arise if their diet lacks fiber.
 4. Weight Management: Hay is an important tool for managing a horse's weight. It can help them maintain a healthy body weight or, when necessary, gain weight gradually. Adequate access to hay is crucial for horses' weight control.
 5. Mental Stimulation: Foraging for hay stimulates natural grazing behavior in horses, which is essential for their mental and emotional well-being. It provides mental stimulation, preventing boredom and reducing stress.
 6. Continuous Forage: Horses have a natural instinct to graze throughout the day. Hay ensures they always have access to forage, even when pasture grazing isn't available or during the winter months.
 7. Emergency Preparedness: A stockpile of hay can be vital in emergencies, such as natural disasters or disruptions in the supply chain. Having a reserve of hay ensures that horses can continue to be well-fed in challenging situations.
By donating to Save the Horses Hay Drive, individuals can directly contribute to the rescue's ability to provide this essential resource to the animals they care for. It helps ensure that rescued horses, as well as other animals in their care, receive proper nutrition and can maintain their health and well-being. Donations to the Hay Drive provide tangible support that directly impacts the lives of these animals.
Additionally, donating to this cause raises awareness about the importance of proper equine nutrition and the challenges faced by equine rescues like Save the Horses in securing these vital resources. It allows people to be part of a compassionate community that comes together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these animals, giving them a chance at a better future.

<![CDATA[HELP US SAVE LIVES]]>Wed, 20 Sep 2023 01:43:09 GMThttp://savethehorses.org/our-blog/help-us-save-livesSaveTheHorses has been using our sling for many years. People sometimes don't call a veterinarian until it's too late.

If we can get the horse up, it will stay up and get better. In Cherokee and Milton, GA we are lucky to have a Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) team through the Fire departments. However, most counties do not. And who do you call?

We were working with SOS Horse Rescue and we came out to help this horse in Alto GA. Luckily, we found a tow truck willing to help us get the horse up.

WHAT WE NEED
What we need is people willing to take a class for becoming part of a TLAER team. We also need someone to write a grant so we can send people to the TLAER class in GA.

We already have a Large Animal rescue truck. It needs to be totally road worthy, have insurance. and a few people with a CDL to drive it.

You can make a difference in a horses life. This can be a life or death situation.

If you are interested in helping in any way, email me, Cheryl, at info@SaveTheHorses.org #WeAreRescue
