match the right horse

with the right home

Adoptables @ Save the Horses

Our adoption program has placed over 1000 horses into loving, permanent homes since 1998.  Adoption can be one of the most rewarding and wonderful experiences of your life. We have horses that are rideable in all disciplines, as well as non-rideable horses that can fill the much-needed job of “companion,” acting as friends for other horses. Here at Save the Horses, we believe that every horse should be loved and valued. At any given time, we have many horses of various breeds, sizes, and ages available for adoption.

Open your heart to a horse from Save the Horses and adopt a partner for life!

Monthly Spotlight

Picture
Rosa is a 15 year old Thoroughbred mare.  She stands approximately 15.2 hands and is absolutely gorgeous. She came to Save The Horses with two other thoroughbreds, Patrick and Fiona. She is halter broke but has not been ridden.  She is very sweet and would make a great companion horse or a great project for a trainer.

The Process

Our adoption process is comprehensive and designed to assure the best possible match possible between horses and adopters. Horsemanship skills, level of training, inherent personality, and the ability to care and continue the development of the adopted horse are all considered.  Start out by viewing our adoptables on Petfinder and then fill out the interest form below and one of our adoption team will contact you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I go about adoption?
A: If you haven’t already, please look at our adoptable horses here. Then, read our adoption policy and submit an adoption interest form (both are below.) A member of our team will reach out shortly.
Q: I submitted an adoption interest form online, what are the next steps.
A: If you have recently submitted an interest form, someone will reach out shortly.
Q: What is the price for adopting horses?
A: It depends on variety of factors, such as horse’s overall health, if they are rideable, etc.
Q: Is the adoption fee refundable?
A: No. However, the adoption fee is considered a donation and tax deductible since Save the Horses is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue.
Q: Are all the horses rideable?
A: Not always. Since this is a rescue, we get our horses from different situations.
Q: Is this horse trained in…?
A: While we have horses that are rideable, many of them may need additional training. If they are trained in particular area, it usually is in their description. The rescue generally has does not have resources to train the horses.
Q: Is this horse available?
A: Our adoption websites (PetFinder & Adopt-A-Horse) are usually up to date, so if the horse isn’t on there, they are likely not available for adoption.
Q: Can I come meet the horses?
A: Please arrange a date with us for a meeting. Not all the horses are on the rescue’s property. They may be in a foster home, or the horses’ owners have contacted the rescue to arrange an adoption through the rescue to find a safe home for them. Even if the horses are at the rescue, they may be shy.
Q: What is the difference between adoption, foster, and sponsorship?
A: Adoption is you legally own the horse(s). Foster is you are providing a place for the horse(s) to stay; volunteers may help with feeding. Sponsorship is monetary contribution to taking care of a particular horse. Sponsorship may be continuous.
Q: Who can I contact for additional questions?
A: Email us at adoption@savethehorses.org.
