WELCOME TO SAVE THE HORSES
Our goal at Save the Horses is to love and rehabilitate rescued horses and then place them in loving and caring homes. 

Our heart swells when we hear stories of how the adoption has not only changed the life of the horse but also the adopter.  This is why we call ourselves not only a horse rescue, but also a human rescue.  Here are some of their stories.


Adopter: Eunice / Horse: Joker
Not only did I have the good fortune of getting this AWESOME, quiet, well-mannered, handsome, registered, retired barrel racer, I came away realizing that Save the Horses does even more than rescue animals from horrific, dire circumstances! That in itself is so commendable!! But Save the Horses also helps good, responsible horse owners rehome their beloved animals when life has thrown some unforeseen and difficult challenges at them through no fault of their own, making it impossible for them to afford or continue caring for them.

My newly adopted horse enjoyed nearly two decades with his former owner, and it was with a very heavy heart that she had to part with him. I am truly blessed with having this opportunity to adopt him and keep him in my care. And I made a new friend as well.

I truly thank the Good Lord for Save the Horses, because none of us knows what our own future holds for us even with the best made plans. You folks are AWESOME!!
Adopter: Allison Sierra / Horses: Harlow and Koda
Cheryl and a handful of volunteers rescued a 4 year old mare and her 12 week old filly from a kill pen in May 2023.  The mare was emaciated from starvation while still nursing her little baby.  They lived at the Talking Rock farm and the amazing STH volunteers showed them love and nursed them back to health.

A fellow volunteer and friend, Linda Champ, brought me up to Talking Rock to meet them, and I fell in love.  I went up every weekend and days off (since I work full time) for two months, building a relationship with them and gaining their trust.  I adopted Harlow and her filly, Koda, in August.  Cheryl graciously gave them a ride to a beautiful barn that is much closer to me.  I do the self-care option so I am responsible for all of their care, feeding, cleaning and turning out, which helps build our bond.  
As of now (end of Sept), Harlow is out in one of the barn's huge pastures and has found some friends to graze with.  Koda, who is about 7 months old, is fully halter trained and is in her own paddock until she is big enough to be turned out with the herd.  But don't worry about Koda being alone; she has friendly neighbors in the paddocks next to hers and she also likes to chat with the herd as they are being turned out and brought in.

Thank you so much to Cheryl for rescuing them, Linda for introducing them to me, and all of the volunteers who took care of them and gave them the love they needed.
Adopter: Tasha Merrill / Horse: Archie
Archie has been a busy boy, learning lots since I adopted him. We have been working on groundwork, trailer loading, and he just started some under saddle training. He also enjoys playing with his two brothers, who were adopted from Save the Horses, back in 2017. We are looking forward to a long partnership together!!
Adopter: Annabelle Carr / Horse: Bandit
Bandit, a 12 year old gelding, was one of 10 horses, rescued by Save The Horses from a starvation case in August 2022.  After his rehab at the rescue, and training through a wonderful sponsorship program, Bandit, who was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, is now living his life with our family.  I happened to be on his rescue team, and meeting Bandit again months later, and inviting him to be a part of our family, has been a joy.  He is a wonderful, kind-natured horse, and is very well loved. 
Adopter: Kira / Horse: Smokey
Smokey came into the rescue, with several other horses, underweight and sickly looking. He spent a few months putting on some weight and then he came to my place for training (thanks to Sherry Irwin who sponsored his training). Smokey was a challenging, dominate horse and I was concerned that he might be hard to place. I didn't plan to have him stay at my barn once his training was completed, but then I fell in love.

Actually, we all fell in love with him. He has become a favorite here. He's always ready to connect and loves to follow people around. Smokey was just looking for understanding and leadership and he has blossomed into a solid, trustworthy partner. It's such an honor to be a part of giving these young rescue horses a second chance at life!
Adopters: Emily & Gary / Horse: Zipper
I unexpectedly met Zipper in February while helping Save the Horses to rescue and rehome a large herd. As soon as he greeted me, I knew he was special. Over the next few months, we became fast friends.

He made me laugh with his goofy personality and warmed my heart with the way he enjoys being around both horses and people. My dad also met him and they became buddies. Together, my dad and I adopted Zipper this summer.  He has become a part of our family and brings us joy and plenty of laughter every day. You never know when you need a horse to fill your heart, but all horses, including Zipper, seem to have this innate awareness.
